The Very Best Home For Me

I feel like I have put in a poor effort for 'Creative Everyday' this month, busy busy bumble bee I am so I took some time out to think about the theme for this month 'HOME'.
My mind was taken back to when I was little and all I have ever wanted in this world was a house of my own.  My favorite book was 'The Very Best Home For Me'.....

A very lovely little golden book about a whole group of different animals trying to live together in one beautiful little house.  We had a play house which was an old chicken house down the bottom of our yard, but after my creativly destructive brother ripped the door off it got wet and rotted .  We used to wash the dishes with the left over 'Dynamo' washing powder and even had a clothes line with a little path, we used to sit on the tin roof and pick bird beak pods off the trees.  And then it was gone and all that remained was a wild ginger patch.....

After that I spent alot of time pegging out string lines and planning where my next house would be.  I used to go to the city to stay with my grandma for the school holidays and when I got home I would be so sure that my dad had spent the time building me a little house as a surprise.  It was always the first thing I checked for but it was never there.  I didnt feel I was asking for much, just a place to clean and decorate and rake the autumn leaves.....

Is this the reason that I put in such a huge effort to build my own house???
An all consuming 3 year mission.....

So thanks to this beautiful little book touching my heart I have made a very special dream come true, It only took 20 something years of planning.  It has made me very aware as a parent of magic spaces for kids, munchys favorite place at Playcentre is the playhouse so I guess I better start planning her little dream house with her so when she goes away for the holidays she can come home to the best surprise ever....

Somewhere to hang her washing.....

Have tea and cookies with friends....

Wash and dry the dishes......

Sweep the floor.....

Tend the yard.....

Plant some flowers.....

and cook up questionable nature treats for everyone to eat....

Its nice that in the end I have finally found the very best home for me  xxx
Have you reached your dream home yet??

  1. What a beautiful post! I don't think I remember this story (although I had quite a few Little Golden books). Thanks for sharing what it's all about. I have a great husband, a nice old house(over 60 years old) with character, two rambunctious and loving dogs, a small yard with vegetable and flower gardens, a cute kitchen to whip up yummy dinners and desserts (my favorite). So, I think in that sense I have found my "dream home." Sometimes home is where you want it be...
    :) Have a great day!

  2. I have my dream home...but the trouble is, it's NOT in my dream place. I wish I could pick my little house up and place it somewhere else, away from suburbia and flight paths and loud cars and too much light and noise and pollution. Somewhere out in the bush, where it's peaceful and quiet, where I can think, hear the birds sing, smell fresh air...and see my kids run wild and know they're safe! I think a move is in the air. It means saying goodbye to our little lovely house, but we can make a new home, it's what's inside us that makes a home anyway.

  3. We built our dream home nearly 8 years ago...I designed it with a house in mind where my best friend lived growing up - it was the most magical (well I thought so) 2 story white house. The stairs had no bannisters (dangerous, yes, but so exciting for us children). It had a secret boxroom at the top of the stairs, where we would hide away, and then in Wendy's attic bedroom, there was a door in the back of the wardrobe which led into the ceiling. It was on a couple of acres of land in the middle of suburbia, and they had lots of animals - I loved it here. When we built our house, I insisted on secret rooms entered through our wardrobe...my children love these spaces, and so do all the children who come to visit...

  4. That was one of my favorite books when I was little. My grandpa and grandma had it at their house.
As for my home...I live alone with my cats, and it is absolutely the very best home for me right now. :)
