OWOH The Last Breath

Here we are for another year of sharing our hearts and our gifts. I love this event sooo much and am sad to say this is the last, but lets not dwell for surely there are gifts to be found.....

click on this link for a list of all the other people joining in this year

http://awhimsicalbohemian.typepad.com/

and thankyou to Lisa who has put on this event which must be an immense effort.
She has helped the blogging world make the biggest web of connections with her event.  Spinning life long friendships, artistic meetings and a support chain so huge we all feel the love of each other, who knows...maybe blogging will save the world, I know it has saved thousands of womans sanity!

anywhoo! my story this year.....

Its time to brush your cobwebs away, or do you save your cleaning for another day????

Ohhh once upon a time a girl cleaned her house furiously, she collected alot of things, always from her adventures she took at the beach, shells, rope, bottles, sea glass, grasses and bones.  It was during one of her cleaning frenzies that she made a fated mistake....

or maybe it was her displaying that was the fated mistake, for who teeters bottles at the edge of a dresser???

the beach collected bottle fell and before the girl could catch it, it had smashed....

too busy looking up so she could moan at her clumsiness the girl looked down and saw that it contained something, paper rolled ever so tightly...

she carefully sat down and unrolled it.....it was a map...a map of where she lived, only this was a mermaid map???  mermaids??

along with the map were some pages of writing, the diary of a girl named Sophia. The girl read the sad pages as the story of Sophia's life unfolded....

"October 1897
I am on my way across the sea, being delivered to my new life, a life I do not want to live, a man I do not want to marry, a wife I do not want to be.  We have sheltered in this bay until the weather is better and my journey continues.  I am spending my days walking the shores......gazing to the horizon and seeing that the land that will become my home is much further than I can understand...

it seems all I can do is cry, day and night, how can my family do this to me.   Pin all the hopes on one person, I carry the burden of my families happiness on my weary shoulders...I must right their wrong....

I have had a strange encounter that I must record, for surely the best story I will ever have to tell my promised children.  While I walk all day along the shores, I hear a sweet song wherever I go, it raises from the depths in the bubbles of the surf......and yesterday I met her....a mermaid...

she swims the shore line following me as I go, comforting me and watching my every move......

I watch her swim freely and wish for the life of flowing grace and freedom she has...

I met her on the shore where her tail had dried and she was able to walk.  She showed me to her cave, a collector of things, she is always finding the beauty in everyday treasures.....

she loved to show me her treasures, so proud of her lifes work, this is all she has to do, see beauty and collect it....

Ohh how I wish for something so simple.... what a difference our life purposes are....

moulded by my history I have no idea who I could possibly be, I only who Ive been told to be...until I met her I had no yearning to know..

and as I sat once again on the rocks crying to myself, I saw a hand emerge from the foam of the sea....

it was her again....telling me that i could join her, that I could swim forever in freedom and collect all the beauty I see along the way.....

Ohh she makes it sound so amazing but....my family, I am doing this for my family, they need me....
I cannot go with her, I have so many relying on me...

I sit alone in my cabin, how my sadness has now tangled with anger and frustration, why must I fix anothers mess, why me, this dowry of beautiful clothes, an offering of everything we are not....

I tear at my dowry, shredding the dresses that will adorn my new married life...

I spend my nights sewing bits of fabric together to try and stop my aching inside to run to my mermaid and be set free....a tribute to the life that could be....while I sew I make a wish to be set free....

Today a storm is brewing, the wind has turned and our shelter has been broken...I quickly pack my things safetly for we are abandoning ship, if we are not too late.....

I will put this diary and my map in a bottle so as not to get wet, incase the ship goes down...... .. .. . .what am I saying, incase the ship goes down?? surely if the ship is in trouble this is my chance, I could leave without a trace and join my mermaid, a blessing from the sea, this is my chance to finally be free...If you find this diary, it is no longer in my posession, so the storm has taken my boat"

the pages pushed into the bottle and safetly sealed, she fled....

out the cabin door, past the frantic men on deck and into the raging sea....

calling for her mermaid to come and take thee...

the mermaid arrived and reassured her that she had nothing to be afraid of, soon her old life would be nothing but a memory, floating in the foam.....

and they were both now free to collect beauty in the sea....

The girl sat on her floor feeling perplexed but elated....What a truly crazy story, could this possibly be true???
The girl had a map, so she might as well take a look....

she took her Kayak and went searching on the sea, first to the Island where the mermaid cave had been....

she searched the shore line for any kind of cave but they were all empty, what was she thinking, this was over 100 years ago!...

but there it was, tucked up in the shore line, trinkets and treasures galore, she couldnt help but look around, she found a pair of shell earings and decided to take them, she left her own earings as an offering...

the girl made her way back to her Kayak and set off to find a ship wreck, surely this wouldnt have happened, she had no way of knowing if the ship really did go down, apart from the fact that she had the bottle...

and there it was, just as Sophia had predicted, the reamains of what once would have been a great ship....

the girl approached once again not sure what she would find, if anything....

she searched and searched, broken glass, bottles, metal fittings, all wonderful finds but not quite wonderful enough....

then under some boards, over grown with tree roots, she spied a tin, kept sheltered for a hundred years....

the girl tore at the roots to free the tin, getting more frantic and excited the closer she got...

she took the tin to the back of the ship and sat down to open it....

after 100 years the boat was growing into a forest... she pulled and pulled at the tin, desperate to see what was inside...

and then it opened....its contents looked perfect......

weary, almost like in a dream she pulled up the brittle paper to reveal something so beautiful.....

it was a fabric embroidery piece, it had to be the one that Sophia had written about....

the girl sat in awe....what had she found, does this mean that the story is true, the mermaid cave, the hanging, the boat???....the fabric was beautiful and she could see the hours of work Sophia had put into the fabric....hours of sadness and yearning.  The girl was overwhelmed with what she held, someones secret, a secret so huge, she may be the only person who knows what happened to Sophia.....

I must do something special with this, she thought and she searched the shore line thru broken wreckage for a perfect piece of wood....

thin, long and a little bit straight....

the girl left the ship satisfied with what she had found, she returned home with her glass jar, tin and stick and memories of a day that started out so mundane with cleaning and ended in a journey to a world which was made of fairy tale stuff...

the girl, who was ever so crafty sewed the fabric to the stick and made it into a hanging for her to hang on her wall.
It will always remind her to
live her life as if she is always free
and to
collect the beautiful things along the way...

THE END

and this is what she had made.

Hmmmm maybe you would like it???
We are in a giving mood!

this hanging is my first prize for OWOH
a fabric hanging of the mermaid kind, hanging from a specially selected stick from a tree growing in Sophia's ship wreck.

handstitched...

this prize will be drawn randomly from all who enter, so please leave a comment..

This is a blog event so you must have a linkable blog to your id to be able to enter...

and on Feb 18th I will have a drawing and reveal the winner.....

so thankyou for your comments, I love them...

so much so that this year I am giving away two prizes, remember those shell earings from the mermaid cave?? well we will give those away too...

The earings will go to my personal favorite comment, because I know some of you put alot of thought into what you say, and this seperates you from the 'copy n paste' crew.
So a pair of mermaid earings for you.....

good luck and thakyou for reading

all my meramid wishes especially for you

  1. What a beautiful work of art all around, the story, the photos and your pieces. You must have had so much fun wearing the costumes into the ocean! I'm thinking of doing photos like that in my wedding gown (after the wedding, of course)!!

  2. Ah what a dream, what a story... and all true? Of course, I guess the fairies could have told you, for don't they know everything?

You did not disappoint my friend - my first read of a OWOH this year and it will surely take some beating! Happy Sunday to you (still two hours to go here!).

I have to go now, because I can hear the strangest hypnotic singing....

  3. Purely lovely, I would love to have this adorning my wall! and the story was superb, just the type of imagining I would've done as a young girl. Oh the adventures I had in my backyard :)

  4. Another wonderful OWOH post, Sheree! I have been too disorganised (and preoccupied too!) to join this year, but I suppose I've still got a little time if I get my skates on...though perhaps something simpler than the prize I made last year! ;-)

  6. Oh Sheree! Pure magical, mermaidy bliss! I could almost taste the saltwater....such fun to put a shoot like this together!....oh, and to play in your dress-up trunk....*swoon* I'd be so happy...heehee!

  7. Dear Sheree,

You have done it again. Yes. Your story -- and the photos -- are magical. They touch my heart -- and they show what a wonderful and utterly creative person you are. Thanks for being you and for taking the time to blog. Your blog posts -- not just this one -- have that special quality, that special something which allows me to believe that the world is better place than the daily news often make us believe. You have that talent for storytelling and for illustrating your stories which makes me think of Hans Christian Andersen or the Grimm Brothers. I have told you that before, but let me say it once again -- thanks for adding magic to my world and the world of others. Thanks for being you. Thanks for the chance to win one of your incredible goodies.

I made a glass bead necklace for OWOH and crocheted it with thoughts of friendship and happiness. I am sure it's the very same mindset you had while creating the hanging. It looks like it -- it looks like magic.

Your remark about the "copy and paste" crew made me grin. Yeah, I guess there will be a couple of treasure hunters out there once again. This year I will also take care that people either provide a link to their blog or at least leave an email address. I am looking forward to meeting kindred spirits along the way -- just as I met you last year, Sheree. You have enriched my life with your incredible imagination and those wonderful photos. You know how much I am into photography and brushing up pictures, don't you? It tells so much about you how you allow us to see what you see -- that there's beauty in nearly everything if you only look closely enough. Even before writing this comment, it's what I wrote in my own OWOH post. :)

Well Sheree, I better come to an end now, but please know that I very much enjoy visiting your blog and that I appreciate all the effort you put into it. Thanks for that special magic.

    Much greetings from Germany
    and a HUGE hug,
    your friend
    Birgit

  26. Sheree...I purposely went down the list to find your name so I could see what magic you came up with this time. Last year was my first event and your blog just rocked my world...actually almost more than your photos I loved your profile, your own personal story, the way you introduced yourself. The photo of you and your daughter with the cowboy hat on...loved that.
And even though we talked a few days ago about the process of creating a story for this years OWOH event and you were so excited to get into it..I myself simply did not take the time.
As I read your tale I couldn't help but wonder if this was a story about you....I am so amazed that someone of your talent and ability has the sadness in life that covers you sometimes....I hope you are free now...
And I'm still stuck on your fairy/tree photo, I want to learn more about that journey.
In the meanitme, your photos are outrageous as usual and your work sublime! Come see my rock posters this year...and I may have to follow suit and choose a second chance to a personal pick...I completely understand your comment regarding the paste and glue crew...lucky for me last year a woman that I truly wished to win..did...so off to explore some more magic...thx for playing so well with others, june #75

  30. MY GOODNESS! You did it again! I fell in love with your spider people story last year, and felt the story alone was the gift, but yet you offered up that beautiful web and glistening findings! Your story telling is so rich and is one of the final pushes to make my own blog last year on 2/5. Alas, i did not win it, but I come back often to reread that story and admire the beautiful creation.

This mermaid and lost sad girl tale is also wonderful! I simply am awe-struck with that gorgeous wall hanging, and admire the very hard work you put into it! I also LOVE that little blue glass jar! The earrings are nice also, but I adore the jar and wall hanging!
I am hoping so to win it, but I also wish everyone else luck! Thanks for the smile and the lovely story!

The colors and the way everything flows like the ocean around a mermaids tail are so intuitive and finely executed it would be a wonderous treasure to hang on my wall and inspire my own journal writing.

  37. Who could not be captivated by this amazing story of Sophia and the Mermaid, paired with such stunning photos one felt as if watching a beautiful movie! Bravo!!!

Just as alluring as the story itself is the amazing treasure you are giving! As the girl searched the beach, I too felt as if I were by her side. And as she opened the weathered tin that beheld Sophia's stitching, I felt as if I were there, enchanted by the colors, fabric, and all that was stitched, as if the sea itself was woven into the creation!

Oh how this would so very much remind me 'to live life as if always free and to collect beautiful things along the way'...

Thank you ever so much for this amazing tale!

The book is called Emily and the Enchanted Frog ~ but the last of the 3 stories in the book tells of when Emily happens upon a tiny crab who believes himself to be a mermaid ~ it's the most darling story ~ and, well, I won't go into the wonderful lesson it bears ~ but I hope you can dig up a copy somewhere.

  61. There comes a moment in this vast, crazy, fast-paced event where i am frantically entering links....fielding questions....trying to keep my head above it all when something may stop me in a frozen moment. While I quickly scan posts to make sure all is well I find if I get too caught up in that moment I will fall terribly behind. BUT then sometimes in the moment, what I see is stronger than myself and I have to go back because I feel it almost pulling my hair to keep me there and saying to just breathe it in. Thus was the case with you and your story. At once I wanted to know more and the photos so mesmerized me. Where had she been able to find such magic by the sea? I wanted to know. Where did she find riches so splendid? I wanted to know. I wanted to know if the girl was able to break the chains that bound her emotions and was free to roam the treasured sea. I wanted to know....and now I want to know more about you. When I created this event back in 2007 my hope was that everyone would give of themselves - draw people in and make them want to stay and then come back again...regardless of prize. You have accomplished that, you personify what my goal was. Thank you for making the end of this OWOH journey so special. and thank you for your wonderful story. As someone who loves to write and imagine and bring things to life....that too drew me in and makes me want to stay awhile for having taken that moment to breathe.
    I hope you're having fun!
    XO

  109. I was born in a little village near the dunes and the Northsea. My mom was a mermaid, who washed ashore on the beach. My dad, in his twenties and a bit sad, not knowing what to do with his life and looking for a soulmate, found her surrounded by shells. Unconciousness... he hid her in his beach cabin and nursed her for days. They fell in love the moment she opened her eyes, and she decided to ask the seawitch to give her legs, so she could stay forever with him. After two years, the mermaid gave birth to a lovely little daughter. Her husband are she decided that this was a very special girl, given from the love that came out of the sea, so they called her Marit, which means'daughter of the sea'

That's me. And mermaids still sing in my head.
I love shells. I love your story. I'm happy I met you through OWOH. Love, from a Dutch (half)mermaid!

I love the ocean and so miss it (living in Las Vegas now)the blues, greens and turquoise colors. The sound of the waves hitting the beach and the rocks. Awww...I can hear it now. The lovely tapestry is rich in the ocean colors and would actually look perfect in my home :D The earrings to be worn will make one feel magical as a mermaid does. 140. really enjoyed the story, couldn't wait to see what would be discovered. you are really very creative. the photography was/is all very pretty...and how neat to have that boat washed up on the shore like that, what a neat place to visit. It really looks like you have some truly remarkable photo opportunities around where you live. I love the colors and design of the wall hanging that you created...funny thing is I have a nautical themed master bathroom with vintage items from the 1930's and even a large pretty German embossed ship card from the early 1800's... of course the mermaid tapestry would look absolutely gorgeous in that room, but like all the gals here one must take their chances and hope that perhaps the mermaid love just may visit their home. It has truly been a pleasure visiting your blog and I will stop back by again.

  146. It is with a little bit of sadness that read through your beautiful post. Each year that I have been fortunate to visit the world that you create to offer your stunning gift during One World One Heart. And for a few moments in my life I wander off into these different worlds. My eyes soak in the images as my mind longs to discover what twist or turn the story will take.

I'm thoroughly entertained, and completely in awe of the time you take to create your posts. (and slightly humbled as well)

Your offering this year is stunning and I would be so happy to welcome it into my home. (and if by some miracle I'm worthy of receiving the beautiful earrings I will sing my own song of thanks to the sea as well as gladly leave my own token of beauty for someone else to find and collect along one of the trails in the mountains near my home.)

I do hope you'll come by to visit my blog if you get the chance as well.

  155. Oh I think I love this year's tale (or is it a tail?) even more than the spider weaving you created last year! I must admit that I have a "thing" for Mermaids, and the images you created were so very beautiful.....I especially enjoyed the ones of them swimming.
Your wall hanging is wonderful and just happens to have many of my favorite colors especially the purples! I can't imagine how long it took to find just the right shells to sew into your design- I CAN tell that you put a huge amount of thought and effort into this- bravo to you!
    Happy OWOH!

  181. Hi Sheree. It is such a pleasure to meet you.
I must say that your mermaid story is absolutely divine. It is funny how as children we dream of such mythical creatures that we either wish to be, such as mermaids or wish to see such as unicorns. As we get older we don't think of these childhood fantasies anymore and our routine of everyday life just takes over. I do want to say thank you for taking me back to my childhood days of make believe and imagination, even if it were only for a few minutes.
I would love to have a chance at winning either your gorgeous wall hanging, or the beautiful earrings to remind me of your mermaid story.

Please stop on by my blog for a visit. I am #78 on the OWOH list.

  193. I wish I could send you a video so you could see that I'm almost in tears right now. Over something I read online!!

The story - and all of the time and effort you put into it - touched me so deeply. There is something about that magical journey that has just awakened my soul. (Perhaps my mermaid calls to me??) I got more and more anxious as I read through, wondering what treasure awaits.

And - breath taken away - that hanging...those earrings...Oh WOW. They are beautiful in and of themselves, but to be reminded of this feeling that stirs inside me right now - to be reminded each time I saw the pieces of this state of being? More than I can hope for.

I want to write so much more but actually, am too anxious to go look around the rest of your stie. :)

THANK YOU, thank you - not only for the opportunity to win, but for the magic you have shared.

  194. Your blog must be very enchanted and magical as I only seem to be able to find it when the OWOH event is going on...truly...I have tried to find you to no avail all year long...very curious indeed. It reminds me of Brigadoon which would only appear every 100 years in Britain. The fairies must have enchanted it so I could only find it for the sake of the mermaid who left the tin full of her beautifully enchanted wall hanging she made out of her wedding dowry. Chills run down my spine to think it was there for 100 years...just like Brigadoon...
You are an amazing creator of stories and of beautiful things...thank you for sharing the story and the sweet giveaways.

  195. You certainly are talented, Sheree, with a great imagination! Glad I found you. I love the use of embellishment on wall hangings and you have the knack for it. Your hanging is so beautiful and diverse. To top it off, the only jewelry that I wear, besides my wedding ring, are earrings! I feel naked without them. Not only that, I collect trinket boxes. So, your second prize would be perfect for me. Oh, I'll certainly settle for the first one, if I have to, LOL! Thanks for counting me in, Sheree.
